Honorary citizen Günter Ahlers honored

Günter Ahlers from Handewitz was active in sports for six decades and has rendered great services to handball and the community. He was instrumental in founding the handball section of the Handewitter Sportverein and later led the club as chairman for 16 years. Together with him, the successful SG Weiche-Handewitt was founded, the Wikinghalle - the original Hell North - was built in Handewitt and the first Bundesliga promotion was contested. Ahlers also played a leading role in the founding of today's SG Flensburg-Handewitt, which is one of Europe's top clubs and yet has its origins in the amateur handball of the Handewitter Sportverein of 1966 in Handewitt.

Last Thursday, a ceremony in honor of Günter Ahlers took place at the Handewitter Gasthof with many companions, sports officials and political representatives. Mayor Thomas Rasmussen: " With the honorary citizenship we honor today a founding father, a handball missionary, a hell north maker, a SG strategist and league manager, simply a sportsman and philanthropist."
