Brief introduction of the municipality of Handewitt

The municipality was formed by unification of the formerly independent municipalities of Handewitt and Jarplund-Weding on March 01, 2008 by public law agreement. At the end of February 29, 2008, the Ministry of the Interior of the State of Schleswig-Holstein simultaneously decreed the dissolution of the Handewitt municipality. This merger created the largest rural municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district and one of the largest in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The municipality covers an area of 7810 ha and had a population of 10,968 as of 31.12.2015. Local districts are Ellund, Gottrupel, Handewitt, Haurup, Hüllerup, Jarplund, Timmersiek and Weding.

Handewitt is located about 40 km north of the county seat Schleswig. In the north it borders on the Kingdom of Denmark, in the east on the municipality of Harrislee and the independent city of Flensburg. The southern and southwestern borders are formed by the municipalities of Eggebek and Oeversee, while in the west the municipalities of Schafflund are adjacent.

The immediate neighbors, the regional center of Flensburg and the state of Denmark, can be reached within 10 to 15 minutes by car or public transport due to the very good traffic connections. The main traffic arteries crossing the municipal area are the freeway Hamburg-Flensburg (BAB 7) with the border crossing in the area of the district Ellund of the municipality Handewitt, the E 3 (B 76) from Flensburg to Hamburg, the B 199 from Flensburg to Leck, the B 200 from Flensburg to Husum, the L 17 (Ochsenweg) from the E 3 to the border crossing Harrislee/Padborg, the L 192 (border road) from Harrislee to Süderlügum as well as the K 36 from Weding still Barderup.

To the local parts:

The district of Handewitt is the location of the municipal administration and at the same time the location of two schools (Danish elementary school as well as community school with upper secondary school including a support center with two large sports halls, one of which is approved as a meeting place), three kindergartens (Protestant kindergarten, ADS kindergarten and Danish kindergarten), a forest kindergarten group and a "crèche house" run by Adelby 1, a municipal senior citizens' residential home, a social center at Wiesharder Markt and the DRK care center "Rosengoorn".

The districts of Ellund, Gottrupel, Hüllerup and Haurup still have a predominantly rural character and agricultural features; with their extensive meadows, pastures and forests, they invite visitors to linger and explore the many hiking trails. Cycling routes (local routes, some with historical reference, which also touch neighboring communities, cycling routes of the neighboring office Schafflund, which reach into the Handewitter municipal area, as well as supra-local routes such as the "Border Route", the "Historic Ox Trail", the "Way of St. James" and the district cycling network) and the available bridle paths are pleasant offers for tourists and locals in the entire municipal area.

The district of Timmersiek consists primarily of residential development, but medium-sized businesses are also located here, as well as the Adelby 1 integrative daycare center.

The districts of Jarplund and Weding, like Handewitt with a higher population density, have a considerably more "urban character" than the other districts. Parts of Jarplund and Weding belong to the structurally coherent settlement area of the Flensburg metropolitan area; their main function is considered to be the residential function and otherwise the commercial and service function.

Many properties and institutions are located in Jarplund and Weding. Examples include the Jarplund site of the Jarplund Community School (elementary school) and the Jarplund Danish Elementary School, the Weding site of the Jarplund Community School (elementary school) and the Jaruplund Hojskole as a site for Danish adult education. Furthermore, there are three kindergartens (ADS kindergarten and Danish kindergarten in Jarplund and municipal kindergarten in Weding) as well as a retirement home in Weding and a therapeutic children's home in Jarplund.

Tennis courts, playgrounds, sports facilities, two sports halls (school gymnasium in Weding as well as the "Schaulandhalle" as a large sports hall with an attached teaching pool), two recreational homes (which can also be rented to the citizens of the municipality for holding private parties and events within the framework of the applicable usage times) are an expression of an excellent "all-round care" for the residents and citizens.

A constant growth in the residential area as well as in the middle-class commercial area indicate for the future that Jarplund and Weding are on the way to a healthy mixture of "residential and commuter location" and also to an industrial business location.

Administrative support is primarily provided at the Handewitt municipal administration; in addition, the mayor provides administrative support on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the sports and recreation center in Jarplund (in "odd" calendar weeks) and at the recreation center in Weding (in "even" calendar weeks) for residents and citizens from Jarplund and Weding.

Without completely abandoning its rural character, Handewitt is an ambitious municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg economic area with steadily increasing signs of a central-location municipality with a growing number of industrial and service enterprises. An essential feature of the economic expansion is the special-purpose association "Wirtschaftsentwicklungsgemeinschaft Flensburg/Handewitt" (Flensburg/Handewitt Economic Development Association), which was founded on October 7, 1993 with the neighboring regional center by means of a cooperation agreement under public law. The primary task of this special-purpose association is the promotion of cooperation in the area of commercial settlement, namely spatially in the area of the municipality of Handewitt with close connection to the main traffic arteries B199 and BAB 7 (2 freeway connections). The area in question has a net size of around 100 hectares and has been planned, developed and marketed in several construction phases since 1994/1995.

Furthermore, the task field of the special-purpose association extends to the promotion of cooperation, especially in the areas of social housing, school development, local public transport, environmental care, local recreation and culture, and energy management.

The central tourist attraction is the historic Ox Trail leading south from Denmark through the municipal area, whose value for tourism has been known for some time. Thanks to an initiative of the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments as well as a concerted action under the leadership of the city of Rendsburg, an upgrading of this "grown" monument and an increased linkage in tourist concepts can be assumed. Furthermore, the installation of cycling signs in cooperation with the neighboring city of Flensburg was a meaningful addition to the cycling network there and a contribution to the Local Agenda 21 was made.

Numerous clubs and associations throughout the municipality contribute through their activities, in addition to the many facilities and activities of the municipality (riding and cycling trails, sports hall, shooting ranges, various playgrounds and soccer fields, municipal parking areas, tennis courts and halls, village museum, annual vacation passport campaign, Handewitter Festwoche, erection of the maypole, lantern parades, etc.) to create a high residential value for the residents and citizens and to represent a "lively" community.
